The Three Moments Your Body Asks You to Slow Down
Nov 15, 2025We often think overwhelm hits us “all at once,” but the body never works that way.
It speaks in a progression — subtle, then firm, then absolute.
Here are the three moments your body asks you to slow down:
1. The Mobilization Whisper
This is the first shift.
Your breath gets shallow.
Your jaw tightens.
Your shoulders rise without you noticing.
It’s your system saying:
Something feels off. Pay attention.
Most people skip this part entirely.
2. The Somatic Hold
If the whisper is ignored, the body escalates.
You feel stuck on “go.”
You’re wired but exhausted.
You can’t fully rest.
Your mind loops through the same thoughts.
This is not mental overthinking — it’s the survival energy of fight/flight with nowhere to go.
3. The Shutdown Gate
When the system can no longer sustain the charge, it collapses inward.
This looks like:
• numbness
• brain fog
• disconnection
• craving isolation
• difficulty starting anything
• a heavy, weighted feeling in the limbs
This is not laziness — it’s a nervous system protecting you.
Most people don’t realize these three phases aren’t flaws.
They’re signals.
The body isn’t asking you to push harder.
It’s asking you to witness it.
To breathe with it.
To give it space to unwind.
Somatic work isn’t about preventing these cycles.
It’s about learning to meet each moment with the regulation and presence it was missing.
Your body doesn’t need to be controlled.
It needs to be partnered with.
